HarBer High School Aviation Club

We are Har-Ber Aviation, the first public school in the state of Arkansas to offer pilot training as elective credit-bearing courses.  We are currently located at Springdale Har-Ber High School in Springdale, Arkansas, USA (36.18424°, -94.21275°).  Har-Ber Aviation includes 37 club members and 28 students enrolled in our first aviation course.  Our club was formed nearly 3 years ago and before COVID, our membership has increased each year.  Our membership features 2 students with their Private Pilot Licenses currently working on their instrument ratings and a former student that was the Arkansas Skills USA State Champion in Aviation Maintenance and Technology.  We are the first school in the state of Arkansas to adopt the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) High School Aviation Curriculum, which will prepare our students for the FAA General Knowledge Written Exam and the FAA Part 107 Drone Exam during their 2nd year.  When students reach their 3rd year in the aviation program, we will have our students explore job-shadowing, apprenticeships, and flight training opportunities at local airports while they are completing their required course work at school part-time.  This will allow us to help support the aviation and aerospace industries here at home, in our region, and beyond.

We are proud to partner with the Walton Family Foundation and the National Air & Space Museum to host the S.H.E. Can STEAM Summer Camp for middle school students to get them interested in exploring science, technology, engineering, art, and math fields. https://airandspace.si.edu/shecan This summer camp targets women and minorities that remain underrepresented in the aerospace and aviation career fields.  Through our partners, we have acquired 15 Redbird TD2 Flight Simulators that both camp attendees and our current aviation students can use for the purpose of flight training. https://simulators.redbirdflight.com/products/td2

We Need Your Support

The costs associated with our program include the cost of field trips here in Northwest Arkansas and surrounding areas.  One field trip costs up to $500.  That amount covers a bus, substitute teacher fee, fuel for the trip, and food for each student.  We do not have to pay for a bus driver because our advisor has a Commercial Driver’s License and will drive the students during the trip.  Redbird Flight offers a Guided Independent Flight Training (GIFT) program for $250 that gives one student a lifetime license to Private Pilot training activities on any available Redbird-compatible product. https://gift.redbirdflight.com/  For drone training the cost of a stable commercial drone, such as the DJI Mavic Air 2 with kit, is approximately $1000.  When a student passes their FAA General Knowledge Exam and is ready to begin flight training locally, we have flight schools in our area that offer this training to our students for approximately $10000.
